It is the year 1900 in glamorous Newport, Rhode Island, a resort town for the rich and famous. Charlotte, a local working girl, has been working as a secretary for the Rhode Island Reporter in hopes of fulfilling her dream of becoming a reporter. When her boss offers her an undercover assignment as a chance to prove herself worthy of the coveted reporter position and promise of advancement if she does, she takes it. The assignment sends her to the wealthy side of town, as she must investigate the well to do Bible professor, Daniel Wilmont, while working as his children’s governess. Though the assignment causes inner turmoil for Charlotte, who must lie and misrepresent herself to an honest and honorable man, she continues for fear of what will happen if she doesn’t. As the family starts to grow on her, challenge her faith and give her love, Charlotte must make difficult decisions and risk losing the love of her life.
I enjoyed this simple yet satisfying novel. Here is what I thought about specific aspects of this book.
Pace: This book had a steady pace that made it easy to latch onto. I read it quickly with ease and understanding. The pace was neither rushed nor slow. It was an even and steady journey as I followed Charlotte’s story.
Writing: The authors writing style was enjoyable. At moments I felt she repeated herself with regards to the characters thoughts and feelings, but it was nothing too drastic and didn’t change my overall view of the book. Her writing was clear and easy to understand. The story was relatable and enjoyable. It felt like a quick escape to the 19th century.
Characters: I felt the characters in this novel were well developed. There were quite a few due to the nature of the story, but the author does a great job of keeping the characters in check and not over welcoming them to the reader. Each character is developed as far as they are needed without giving useless information to the reader. The characters are not all likable and some have annoying tendencies but overall the author does a wonderful job considering the many characters in the story.
Storyline/Setting: I really enjoyed the setting of this story. I thought the beach gave the story a charming touch. It reminded me of what a modern day Hampton’s trip would have been like in the 1900’s. The storyline was interesting and original outside of the romance. Since the title is a Christian fiction novel, it challenges the reader to stand up for what is right even when others might try to discourage you. I was reminded that the right thing to do is not always the easiest thing to do and more often than not it comes with adversity.
Overall: This book was a good, satisfying read. There were a few aspects of the writing and characters personalities that didn’t make it a great book for me, but I definitely enjoyed it and will continue to read books from the author. The novel is book two in the authors Ladies of Summerhill series and I look forward to reading the titles to come.
